Description

This is a breakout for the Teensy 3.5 and Teensy 3.6 development boards by PJRC. Included are all the pin headers you need to assemble it, a switch to select between USB or external power, and a switch to set the USB host port's power mode (3.6 only). As an option during assembly, you can use the included jumpers (with pin headers) in place of the switches. This breakout can also optionally be assembled with the Teensy 3.5/3.6 Socket Kit (available separately).

This Standard Edition breaks out every signal along two rows of pins. It also has two mounting holes, pads for a full-size USB host port (3.6 only), and a proto area with power and ground rails. Installation of the USB-A host jack is only recommended in conjunction with the Socket Kit in order to maintain necessary height clearance. The A2 revision adds scored carrier rails with mounting holes.

In the case of any mistakes or defects in your order, please let me know right away. I'll do my best to make things right, and I'll cover any costs associated with doing so. There are usually some decisions that need to be made in these sorts of cases, so we'll discuss those in detail depending on the situation.

Assemblies are often built on-demand. Please allow up to two weeks lead time for all orders containing any custom-assembled items. These orders are usually shipped out faster (often within a week) but this timeframe cannot be guaranteed, and is dependent on my workload and the availability of necessary components. If you have a hard deadline for this kind of order, please let me know in advance.

Orders can be cancelled anytime before they've been shipped out. Even if a shipping label has already been generated, a full refund can still be issued as long as the package hasn't already been transferred to the carrier. Once this happens, the order can no longer be cancelled; it can only be returned for a refund.

Returns are fine as long as they occur within a reasonable amount of time. Please notify me of any returns in advance. A full refund will be issued for all returned items that are received in like-new condition. However, outgoing shipping expenses will not be refunded, and any return shipping expenses will not be reimbursed.

It is the buyer's sole responsibility to safely return any purchased items in order to receive a refund. This includes paying for any return postage and/or shipping insurance premiums. If the buyer decides to refuse a package or designate a package as RTS (return to sender) via the carrier (instead of paying for return postage) there is usually no guarantee that the package will be returned to me in a timely manner, or at all. A refund may not be issued until the items are physically received and inspected. If any return shipping expenses are billed to me by the carrier, that amount will be deducted from any associated refund.

International buyers are solely responsible for any import customs duties, taxes, fees, tariffs, or any other associated costs. These costs will not be reimbursed in the case of a return, and any import costs that I need to pay in order to facilitate a return shipment may be deducted from any associated refund. If a shipment is returned to me because of unpaid import customs fees, the original shipping costs will not be refunded.

USPS First-Class International can take a long time to reach certain destinations. If you can't wait at least a few weeks to receive your order, please use a different shipping method. This service also sees the highest rate of lost packages. International shipments valued over $100 USD will almost always be insured, at my expense. If you haven't received your order after 30 days, let me know so we can open an insurance claim and begin the process of getting you a replacement.

I'm willing to consider customer requests regarding the completion of customs paperwork. However, please note that undervalued shipments cannot be insured, and the buyer agrees to assume all risks inherent with this type of situation. In addition to the risk of loss in transit, an undervalued shipment also runs the risk of being confiscated and/or destroyed by customs. If this happens, the order will not be refunded. A first class product

2024! Finally, after a few years delay, I'm excited to start assembling the Tall Dog's excellent Breakout Board for the 3.5/36. I have a 3.5

As a retired electronics engineer (and in "late-years") it's a fiddly job, especially for unsteady fingers and tired-eyes. However, slowly and in no rush to get to the end (and certainly not mine at least) it is manageable. The good Quality of Build is wonderful to work with.

The intention here is to socket the 3.5, so a socket-set was also purchased. A second set was also bought to provide spares for those parts that get sprinkled over the floor, never to found again, except by the vacuum-cleaner.

Hint 1. The four short pogo-pins in the board-kit, will be replaced by the longer versions supplied in the socket set. The 3.5 will be further raised by the female-header being mounted on the board. These longer pogo-pins adequately overcome the summed body-heights (black plastic mouldings) of the female and male headers, when the latter are fully mated together.

Hint 2. The pogo-pins are to be mounted perfectly flat and square upon the oval-pads on the board's upper surface (directly facing the 3.5). The main body of the pogo-pin is 1/16" (one-sixteenth of an inch) or 1.65 mm in diameter. They are two pairs of plated-through-holes, each pair uses the familiar 0.1"/2.54 mm grid. To assist soldering, a very small strip of proto-typing board (coper-removed!) with two holes drilled out to 1/16" can be used to hold the shoulders of the two pogo-pins against the PCB for soldering. Hold the strip down with a small clamp, rather than with the fingers, which would then commit a hand to the task.

Hint 3. The screw-hole sizes UNC #2 will accept an M2 screw-size and the UNC #6 an M3.5 screw-size. UNC threads are different in form and pitch and have no true metric replacement.

Enables compact implementation of Teensy 3.5

I'm relatively new to electronics and have found in the past that soldering can be challenging (for me) - so was a little daunted reading some of the reviews. I reviewed the kit's instructions carefully and was very pleasantly surprised by the way that my Teensy 3.5 assembled to this breakout without any complications. I am replacing an Arduino Mega (and separate card reader) in a robotics project and will need access to both sides of the Teensy 3.5 - this breakout seems like the best way to do that.

Access to all the Teensy's pins

The Teensy boards are powerful solutions to many problems, but as they've become more powerful, it has become harder to use the microprocessor to its full potential. The breakout board (and socket set) allow you to use every pin. The full-access board is 40 pins long with 0.9" row spacing, compared with the Teensy 3.6: 24 pins long with 0.6" row spacing -- definitely not compact, but that's the trade-off.
I had a little difficulty with the pogo pins, but with good light, magnification and the right tools, the assembly was quick and correct. The instructions are good but a picture or two (from a Teensy forum) assured me that I was doing it right.
A few basic test told me it was assembled properly, but the best test will be a program using all the pins.

unlocks the full pins array of the teensy

I honestly think this should be how the teensy is sold. Without this breakout, the pads from the underside of the teensy become available. There was a great deal of thought built into this design. The assembly instructions are very easy to follow. The durability of the breakout is impressive as well. I've soldered, de-soldered, re-soldered and have not had issues with pads lifting.

In Tall Dogs next revision, I'd love to see one pin strip on each side rail re-attached to GND on a cut-able trace. Also, to have SM pads to easy add external pull-up resisters to the i2C pins, and a pad to add an indicator LED to the HOST-PWR switch.

Teensy 3.5 breakout.

An old hand at electronics, yet new to the world of microcontrollers. Built an analog Synthesizer in the late '70s - not from a kit. Loads of fun but shelved it a couple of years later. A couple of years ago, allowed myself to be bitten by the old Synth bug again and collected a clutch of Roland synths and other goodies which led to my first Arduino project, using a Mega clone in a pedal controller. I trashed four ancient ('70s - '80s) for the optical pedals and yeah well.. it works!

Then I came across this:- https://cs.gmu.edu/~sean/projects/gizmo/ and of course put one together, then another etc until now I have this 5-Pack of Gizmos. Next is to pop a T_3.5 in the box with 'em to give the 5-pack a class compliant USB interface, and control surface consisting of forty something buttons, 19 pots, and an encoder etc.

So far I've got one working using a T_3.2 plugged into a Sparkfun adapter with a 3.3volt hacked Sparkfun Midi shield.

Tall Dog's T_3.5 breakout enables me to have access to all pins in a stripboard-friendly way as that's what I'm using.
All pots will be wired direct to analog pins and some muxes are gonna join the party for the buttons.

All the holes have been installed in the box, boards loaded with pots, buttons and it all fits! What remains is laying out and wiring up T_3.5 and associated bits and pieces, more holes and so on. Then to wear out my code training wheels a little more. Hmm the greater part of the task is no doubt the mechanical details.

As for the the Tall Dog breakout. First time I ever ordered stuff from the U.S. Am surprised how quick it arrived. Excellent quality pcb. I read thru the docs and got the gist but am a bit fussy about how things get put together so spent a little time figuring out how to set up an alignment jig and a sequence of where to start and what goes next etc. No stress is best for reliability.

So, thank you Daniel for an excellent product. Keep up the good work.

A Quality Product Requiring Careful Assembly

The board is manufactured to the highest standard, that's a plus.
What I ordered was exactly what I got in the bag, that's another plus.
The documentation is not great, that's a minus. According to the old saying a picture is worth a thousand words, and although I don't expect a small-volume product to be supported with professional artwork a few simple photos would have helped me a lot. Show me, don't tell me.
Assembling the board is a significant fine soldering challenge. That's not a plus or a minus, it's a caution to novices. Careful checking and double-checking is required before the solder flows because mistakes are very difficult to remedy. If I were to tackle another one it would be a piece of cake, of course, and I would be full of confidence.

My Tips

You know that glossy double-sided card that came with your Teensy? Hope you didn't throw it out because it helped me a lot in following Tall Dog's instructions.
There are a couple of Teensy PCB tracks to cut, and the instructions suggest doing that with a razor blade. Yikes! Please don't do that, use the point of a craft knife or, as I did, the tip of a 1mm jewellers screwdriver.
And take it slow and careful, use an illuminated magnifier to check, double-check, and triple-check every joint before moving on the next stage.

I personally couldn't get the surface mount stuff to line up. I ended up breaking the suface mount pads on the bottom of the teensy...

Very useful and well thought out board

I have not traced ever connection so i am just assuming that there are no errors on the board. works well in everything tested so far. it is really useful to have all the pins available. i put sockets on my board and everything aligned well enough to do this. i used very strong sockets so i hope i can get the board off if i ever need to. since this will most likely be necessary only if the teensy fails i am not too concerned. i wanted to have screw terminals on my board so i soldered them on the bottom as recommended and they fit. it is very convenient to have silk screen on both sides of the board so you can identify locations by reference the side of the board that is not covered with headers etc.

Well made, instructions marginal

The boards were well made and all parts were provided. The instructions, however were a bit marginal. Previous boards for the Teensy 3.1/3.2 from this vendor had much better instructions. Some photos would help, not just line drawings.

Lovely Breakout

Ah! I love it a lot, now i can easily access a lot of the pads on my 3.5. It may be too much choice but it's exactly what I wanted and had nice and excellent documentation included. If you need to get to all those pins and pads on your teensy, this is the board!

Nice board for prototyping also nice to have USB Host.

This is a nice little board that allows you to use most if not all of the IO pins of the Teensy 3.5 and 3.6

This board is also nice for those who wish to experiment with the USB Host support of the Teensy 3.6 as it both has a connector to allow you to plug in your USB device, it also has IO pins that make it easy to hook up an analyzer.

Dialog on the website was misleading

The pictures on the website show the unit with the carrier rails removed and with headers
installed, and show the kit as including 4 40-pin headers. I ordered the unit assembled and
left the selection as "leave carrier rails on." When I received the unit it the packing slip listed
the 4 headers but the unit did not have headers on it nor were there loose headers in the
package. I thought that an error had been made and the headers had not been put on, but
when I went back to the web page and looked at the other choice, I saw that it was "remove carrier rails
and install headers" which implies that the default which I had left unchanged when I ordered
meant rails but no headers. It would be clearer if the default option was "leave carrier rails on
and do not install or include headers" and if the packing slip with the package did not list headers
which are in the photos on the web page but are not in the package.

The buyer and I discussed this situation and were able to reach a resolution. The order was missing the extra pin headers which would typically be included with an order of this type. I offered to send additional pin headers to the buyer at no cost, but they declined this offer. I also sent an extra free parts kit to this buyer to compensate them for the trouble and thank them for taking the time to leave detailed feedback.

Perfect bridge between proof of concept and prototype!

Having one Teensy 3.6 mounted with all pins readily accessible without having to spend all your time soldering temporary breakouts is really great. This board makes it so much easier to quickly test running all six UARTs or all four I2Cs if you're feeling up to it. The savings in time pays back in your first use and the board will continue to same more through all following prototyping projects.
