I plugged it into my (macOS) laptop, configured a few things and had triangles appearing on the map before I even connected the antenna.

It's now permanently "plumbed in" to my yacht and interfaced to a Garmin Echomap Plus 45cv via NMEA (connect via blue and brown, select "NMEA HS" on the plotter). It does what it's supposed to and is not complaining.

Might like RSSI indicator but that's apparently not part of the spec so ... meh. Great job!

Awesome to use with OpenCPN

I just tested this hat in the Gulf of Mexico with a cheap VHF antenna. It picked up lots of ships within my line of sight. It works flawlessly with OpenCPN and required no setup beyond enabling AIS in OpenCPN. I would highly recommend this to the budget conscious sailor who wants to have situational awareness in adverse conditions.

Worked as expected

Built a nav computer from a Raspberry Pi for a 70' schooner and used this to receive AIS data. Tested at the dock yesterday and it works great- can see ships several miles away, and it even displays superimposed dayshapes if they're moored or restricted in ability to maneuver. The dAISy HAT had a lot of good documentation and projects on the web so we had it going receiving NMEA messages within 10 minutes of first boot. Works flawless with OpenCPN and Ship tracking sites!

Adrian the maker was also very accommodating when we had some application questions, he took the time to answer our questions and made good suggestions to further optimize our project.

With a little help from Tropospheric Ducting, we have received message from as far as 888NM away!

Since then we purchased another 2 dAISy2+ that had performed perfectly.

Low cost entry into AIS decoding

For dAISy 2+ dual-channel AIS Receiver with NMEA 0183

Order arrived quickly. Case was bent in shipping and the owner sent a replacement at no cost.
I connected the receiver to my laptop, downloaded OpenCPN and maps, and started tracking barges along the Tennessee River.
I also connected the HC-05 bluetooth module and was able to setup OpenCPN on my phone and track boats using wireless between phone and receiver.
I recommend this dual channel receiver for anyone interested in decoding AIS marine traffic.

Excellent AIS receiver

For dAISy AIS Receiver

I opted for the self-contained dAISy receiver rather than the Raspberry Pi ‘hat’ on the basis I could transfer the receiver between computers. Delivery was fast and the receiver well packaged. I plugged it in to a MacBook running SkunkTracker and it worked immediately. I shall use that combination when travelling. At home the dAISy is plugged in to a Raspberry Pi v2 running the free rPiAIS software included in the Pi image available from aishub.net. The v2 Pi has no problem running the software. I am receiving AIS signals from distances of 45-50nm via a Diamond X30
2M/70cm amateur radio antenna on my chimney at 10mAGL/80mASL. Overall I am very impressed with the dAISy receiver and have recommended it to others.

I'm really happy to have found dAISy HAT: I wanted to have a new hobby but was reluctant to pour hundreds of dollars into it, without even knowing whether it would work. The Raspberry Pi 3B + dAISy HAT combo (plus a 2nd hand antenna) is affordable and a provides a great way to enter the AIS world. There's only one glitch at the moment: even though I receive messages continuously, my feed to sites like AISHub halts sometimes. Restarting the Pi fixes the problem. For my purposes, this is not a big deal. Thanks for creating this product!

Great product, easy to install and with great performance

I am very happy with my purchase of dAISy 2+

It was shipped out of US with no problems and I was able to install it by myself following the instructions. Adrian Studer @wegmatt offer additional help and advice by email and answered promptly to few questions.

I used dAISy 2+ during a 1700nm trips from Panama to Georgia (USA) and it proved helpful sailing through busy areas such as the entrance of the Panama Canal and the Straits of Florida. It was connected to the VHF antenna on top of my sailboat's mast (37ft) via an antenna splitter and during the sailing I was able to pick up AIS targets as far as 17nm. I was able to both operate the radio and receive AIS without any problem. I connected dAISy 2+ with an OTG cable to my Android tablet. While it worked good with certain applications (BoatBeacon) it did not showed up on OpenCPN but that was because of Android version issues on my OpenCPN app. I suggest to use a WiFi module that plugs in the dAISy to avoid such problems.

I highly recommend this product because it's inexpensive, easy to install and it performs very well.

Great product for tracking ships. Easily installed. Used it on a recent ocean cruise to track the ship I was on and those nearby.

Product issue: Wished that some of the serial pins were brought out from the daughter board. I want to connect some other devices and it looks like I'll be soldering.

Documentation issue: It told me to connect to /dev/serial0 when in fact it connected to /dev/TTYs0. (Latest Raspian Jessie on a new RPI 3)

Thank you for the review and your detailed feedback.

I don't populate the broken out serial interface (I2C, UART) to avoid conflicts with enclosures. A GPIO shim may be useful if you don't want to solder on the HAT. But as mentioned, soldering directly on the dAISy HAT won't void the warranty. I'm happy to see my customers experiment and hack. :-)

The UART situation on the Raspberry Pi 3 is a bit complicated. /dev/serial0 refers to the primary UART, which when using the shell script mentioned in the documentation, is an alias for /dev/ttyAMA0. /dev/ttyS0 is the mini-UART which may show timing issues depending on clock configuration of the RPi.

Tiny but packs a huge punch

We waffled about buying a dAISy for an upcoming trip. We thought of all the people who don't have AIS reception and figured that we would be fine without spending the extra bit of cash. A friend convinced us to go ahead and pull the trigger with a story about sitting in thick fog with an invisible container ship only half a mile away.

So we went ahead and bought it. It was incredibly easy to hook up to OpenCPN (running on a Chromebook in a Linux environment). The documentation was clear and concise, and we saw ships miles away within minutes. Now, a week into our trip, we've been thankful for the AIS reception on multiple occasions.

Amazing

Works perfect with Glomex RA 201 and Raymarine A50 Plotter. Communication to the plotter with simple two wire connection via NMEA 0183. Shipping to Germany was good. The package was helt at Customs in Frankfurt Airport for about 2 weeks, but i didn't had to pay any taxes or customs.

dAISy is perfect with OpenCPN

I'm running OpenCPN on Raspberry Pi and wanted to get AIS traffic visible.
dAISy was easy to set up .. on linux screen I went to dAISy settings and chose only channel A ..saved settings.
Then new connection ... OpenCPN / connections / new /dev/tty/ACM1 baudrate 38400
and wait some time to get AIS targets visible. At the time of testing I have no proper antenna ... just one meter or about three feet of copper wire as antenna and I can see traffic 11 kilometers away.
Good product .. I will buy another when I need it .. and I will recommend this to a person who is looking AIS receiver.

Plug and play out of the box - amazing

Great little device that I now use with my Raspberry PI running kplex , a furuno GP32 and a glomex RA201 splitter to get AIS data to my ipad over wifi. Adding the dAISy to this setup was very, very simple. Just adding the /dev/ttyACM0 to the kplex.conf, restart the service and poof.. in business. AIS targets displayed..

Shipping was fairly quick, picked up the package at the post office after 10 days ro so to pay import duties, and documentation was clear. Even an email with additional instructions.

All in all great experience!

dAISy 2+ is a great little AIS Reciever

For dAISy 2+ dual-channel AIS Receiver with NMEA 0183

I'm very happy with my purchase of this little guy! Setup was quick and easy, the included instructions are great, the installation didn't break the bank, and I'm pulling in targets from 45 miles away!

I'm navigating my small (28') power boat on the Columbia river using the Open Captain software on my laptop. If you are planning on interfacing this AIS receiver with Open Captain, it couldn't be easier: A well written, and well illustrated procedure in the manual drives you through the process step by step.

I'm pulling AIS signals from the air with my 2M long VHF antenna. I'm using a Glomex RA201 splitter box which can be had for about $70 online:

Unlike its little brother, the dAISy 2+ is equipped with a 6-pin serial IO port connector on its panel that can connect to a DT-06 WiFi module. This was attractive to me as I wanted to connect the AIS receiver to my laptop wirelessly, no cables to run! I purchase the following module from Ebay for less than $5 for this purpose:

Again setup for using this DT-06 module couldn't have been easier as the dAISy 2+ owners manual contains a a very thorough and complete treatment here as well.

I did a bit of pre-wiring of the three components together at home. I also pre-setup all the components using a 12V bench supply to power the various pieces. I spent an hour tops with all my pre-wiring and setup chores!

On the boat it was 5 minutes of plugging cables, adding a fuse to my panel, and I was then up and running. Bringing up Open Captain on my laptop I was seeing all of my AIS targets on screen: No futzing around, it just worked! And as I said, I was pulling in targets from 45 miles away.

If you are moderately handy with tools, and have a bit more than a very basic familiarity with computers, then getting the system working will be a total no brainer for you! Total cost of the installation for me was just $130 (as I got a very good real on the RA201).

I can't recommend this product strongly enough!

It is working very well, consistently acquiring tracks on commercial traffic outside 16NM on a 50’ mast and our existing VHF antenna. The instructions were great and it was easy to set-up on the Pi, and works well with OpenCPN. Fantastic product!

For ais marine configuration with open cpn on raspberry pi3, works very well. Easy installation, no difficult setting required. Only problem is that rpi does not reconize the daisy at each new start. Seems it is not a problem from the daisy but the rpi must be set correctly.
I have recommended this pruduct to a friend who will probably buy one.

Just great

It's amazing. Amazing that something this small and inexpensive could work this well. Dropped it into our on-board system - wired it to the NMEA wifi router and bingo: AIS targets on all displays. We added a VHF antenna to the stern rail and using just that we were able to see targets as far as 46 miles away. Not even sure how we did that. It worked out very well in the fog in the middle of Lake Superior where we had advance notice of freighters near our course. And in the middle of the night we were able to determine that we needed to tack away to stay safety away from the path of another freighter. It couldn't have been easier to install and use. The only difficult part was crawling around below decks to run the dedicated antenna cable.
