A nice value and ready to go out of the box... maybe.
For NodeMCU ESP8266 Development Board
I ordered several of these at the same time as an Adafruit Huzzah (to use as a sort of baseline). While the Huzzah came in faster - and of course more expensive - this was in my hands in just two weeks. China Post is always a crapshoot but it was clearly put into motion in nothing flat.
Once it got here I discovered the downside to the onboard USB conversion; the chipset didn't easily work natively with my mac and OSX 10.10. I went and got the drivers that supposedly match the onboard SI Labs stuff but no dice so far, even after a reboot. It's not the end of the world - I was able to get it working instantly in Parallels using the USB cable. I also was able to use my FTDI-TTL cable with it by connecting the tx, rx, v+, and ground lines with some jumper wires, since they're not in a row matching the cable pinouts.
That's a little less convenient than just popping the connector on the headers as they go on the Adafruit board, but on the other hand that board comes to you without any pins soldered on; you have to put on the headers yourself. This came out of the bag with the pins already on.
Perhaps I'll manage to get the proper driver files loaded down the road, but for the moment having the TTL cable working is good enough. But if you don't already have an alternate cable and are mac-only, be cautious for now.
Theoretically this board comes with the NodeMCU Lua interpreter set up to be an access point so you could use it without any cables at all. When I look in my list of available networks there is indeed a properly named AP there. But I was unable to connect to it from two different machines. I'm not sure if that's a problem with the server or if the documentation just indicates the wrong WPA code. Connecting with the supposed '12345678' password doesn't work, nor does 123456789 or 1234567890. This really doesn't matter much to me but since it's part of their ad I thought I'd mention it.
Overall I'm quite happy with the purchase but it could have been very frustrating if I hadn't had an alternate connection method on hand.
