Almost 9 years later and still going strong

For USB µISP

I bought this device from Gepetto in February of 2015. Since then, it's been tossed into many random drawers, been through two apartment moves, and yet every time I've used it it's always *just worked* which says something about the design and designer!
Many moons ago when I was getting into microcontrollers, the AVR Dragon was the new hotness. You'd think the official programmer board from Atmel would have been resilient, but nope. It somehow died, as did my MkII ISP. Yet between this, my PicKit 3, and my MPLAB Snap, I've got all the bases covered with devices that actually last and don't just randomly die while sitting on the shelf between uses.
Thanks for making such a great little programmer!

I got the version with the blue display - because I work on computer screens with the lighting dimmed - and got the "full-meal-deal" (complete kit). What a joy to simply plug it in an go! Initially I noticed that the ":" (colon character) separating the hrs/minutes/seconds were too bright - but soon found an option to disable them. Perfect. Easy to setup - no manual required. I highly recommend this product to anyone - even someone minimally technical. I designed my own clock face with zodiacal boundaries and some reference stars, got it printed/framed at zazzle, and it looks and runs great with this mechanism popped right in. It's not quite the beauty of a spring-driven brass Waltham on the pier of an historic telescope, but it serves the purpose perfectly. Thank you for this little electronic gem.

It'd probably be a good idea to dump the EEPROM and take note of the calibration factor (bytes 4-5 - bytes 0-3 are a PRNG seed). The controller is fused to preserve EEPROM across reprogramming, but if something goes wrong and this calibration is lost, the movement won't be as accurate.

Fantastic, interesting, and great fun

These are really nice, complete and ready to go "out-of-the-box" clock movements. I bought the lunar clock movement and am having great fun working with it. It's very nice that all the information about the clock and the software is available, and it's amazing that so much work and attention to detail has been made available. Overall very impressive. I've learned a lot about the moon just figuring out how to set the "moon age" time. I bought several since this is my first time experimenting making any kind of a clock and I wanted to have a backup in case I damaged it, but that wasn't a problem. The movements themselves are very standard, and all the work with installing the clock chip and programming was already done, so basically you're ready to go. For my first test I popped the movement out of existing cheap wall clock and popped this movement in, and it worked fine, I had a working lunar clock. It's been running several weeks now without a hitch. Since all the hard work has been done, I'm now just figuring out what kind of clock face and clock body to make.
Shipping was incredibly fast, shipped within hours of ordering, and received in just days. Quality is first rate.

Works well with most of the AVR family. I had been using an Arduino to program other AVR chips and while this worked, it wasn't as smooth as i would like. This works 100% of the time and is much faster and simpler to use.

Great kits! Perfect functionality.

These are great kits. I have both V3 and V6. I actually might buy a few more. PCBs and parts are of great quality and functionality is perfectly implemented. GPS is super sensitive and locks very quickly. Customer service is great, too. I ended up with a defective LED. He overnighted it! Quite impressive and very much appreciated.

I have one installed as an independent clock, and the other one is used as timing source for an NTP server. It is working wonderfully.

An only thing I wish is if I can get SMA connectors and power connectors uninstalled. As designed and installed, they stick out from each side limiting casing options. I have a desoldering station, so I removed them and replaced them with right angle type.

Not mentioned specifically anywhere is that V6 can use battery for backup. It's a small CR1220 type. I imagine it is storing survey data for GPS. Works fine without but will take a while to lock as it has to survey every time. It was a super-cap on V3, I believe....

Great for SDR

I'm using this with a Hackrf (att the 5V square to 3V) to measure Doppler shifts on satellites. If you need something to improve an SDRs clock and don't want to drop 2k on a rubidium clock, I say this is it. You could try to build your own OCXO, but kitting the build would prob cost around $150. In my mind, cost vs utility, this thing is a great bargain. Nice work.

This is the best high-accuracy clock you can buy

For GPS Clock

If you own fine watches and want to be able to truly know what their accuracy is then you need a high accuracy time source that you can trust 100%. Unless you can afford to have your own atomic clock (not a radio sync clock that syncs to WWVB - those drift over the 24 hours that elapses between syncs) then you can't do better than this GPS clock.

This clock is showing you the time signal from a GPS satellite (which has an actual atomic clock onboard) in real time. It doesn't sync to the atomic clock, it displays the real time atomic clock data. If you don't have a GPS signal then it doesn't show the time. If the clock is showing time, then you're looking at live data.

I LOVE the tenths of a second. I can take a photograph of my precision timepiece (watch) in front of the GPS clock and compare the watch to the GPS clock, with the tenths of a second allowing for even sub-second measures of accuracy. There are other GPS clocks out there (like high accuracy time sources to be installed on a network) but they only display whole seconds. Those are useless for my purposes.

I was so frustrated at trying to find a high accuracy clock that shows tenths of a second that I was going to undertake building my own. I'm glad I found this one first. It saved me a ton of time and I have no doubt that the product Gepetto is selling is better than anything I would have achieved no matter how much time I put into it.

I'm sure there are other uses for this besides using as an error free reference for precision timepieces, but if you are an owner of such watches I can't see how you can live without one of these clocks.

Does it seem like I love mine? Yes. Yes I do. :-)

Works great. Windows 10 uses the modem driver for it right away. I use it with PuTTY. I'd love to have a case for it. Meanwhile, I'll probably buy a couple more for my co-workers. The RX/TX lights are cool, and I could see them coming in handy.

Great clock: Can I use as timer?

I love this clock, especially the tenth-second display. But reading it in real time isn't really possible so I video record it and read back in slow motion to time an audio cue. Pretty awkward. Is there a way I could freeze the display with a relay contact closure or equivalent? My application is measuring the performance of an antique clock. It produces a strike on the half hour that I'm using to gauge its accuracy. Do I really need tenth-second resolution for that, you might ask? Well, I'm getting results as good as 3 seconds per week. Pretty gross, I know, but this is 1890 era technology. (Actually, some were way better than this one.) Thanks

Great GPS Clock

For GPS Clock

I purchased the assembled clock circuit board without the case as I wanted to install it into a Hammond Translucent Plastic Case ( the largest one fits perfectly ) so I could install power and GPS antenna connectors on the back ( the power and gps antenna connectors are mounted on the sides of the circuit board so their matching plugs exit the sides of the case nick provides ) and not have any screws heads protruding from the front of the case. I purchased black m3x10mm screws to replace the silver screws that come with the case so they would not be noticeable. Since the screw heads are countersunk into the case front and are farther away from the clock display than those surface mounted heads on the case nick provides, they are not as noticeable and for me make the case and display seem cleaner.
Understand, I’m not bashing or disparaging the case nick sells. It’s considerably smaller than the Hammond case, has AM and PM markings on the front and is considerably less expensive than the Hammond case itself not even including all of the associated hardware, plugs and connectors I needed to complete the installation. It just didn’t fit my aesthetic sensibilities.
Because the Hammond case wouldn’t have the AM and PM markings engraved on the case as does the case Nick provides, I decided to replace the Red PM LED with an orange one. I contacted Nick who replied that he would assemble the circuit board but not install the AM & PM LEDs but would include them so I could install whatever LEDs that looked best.
Nick promptly assembled and shipped my clock. After trying a number of different led color combinations and viewing them through the Hammond Red Case so I would know exactly how they would look I chose a Red LED for AM and an orange ( Amber ) LED for PM.
I purchased a back for the case nick sells from nick to use as a drilling guide for the mounting screws for the circuit board and using it drilled the four mounting holes and the two holes for the setting switches into the back of the case. Nick even offered to refund the cost of the back after I used it to drill the holes if I returned it to him undamaged !!.
I then drilled an 8mm hole for the 1.5x5.5mm power socket in the back of the case below the circuit board and soldered a matching right angle power plug cable to the socket since both the power and gps sockets on the circuit board are mounted on the sides.
I drilled a 1/4” hole in the case back for a 4” right angle SMA male to a right angle sma female bulkhead Cable I got on eBay and mounted the bulkhead connector into the case.
I mounted a 4-40 x 1-1/2” threaded standoff/spacer into each of the 4 holes I drilled into the case back. I then plugged in the right angle power plug cable I attached to the matching jack I installed in the case back and the male right angle sma connector on the 4” cable which is attached to the female right angle sma bulkhead connector also mounted to the case back
( because of limited clearance the connectors need to be mounted to the circuit board before it is attached to the standoffs/spacers ).
I then attached the circuit board to the spacers, attached the front of the case to the case body and attached the active gps antenna and the power supply I got from nick to the power jack and female sma jacks I installed on the case back.
The clock started right up and synced the time to the gps satellites within a minute.
The clock looks and works great and Nick was great to work with.

Sidereal time

I purchased the complete 24 hr mechanism, set for Sidereal time, in order to make a sidereal wall clock. Unfortunately there are limited options for a 24 clock face, so I ended up buying a 24 hr clock and replacing the mechanism and hands. The movement keeps perfect sidereal time! Great conversation starter about the difference between solar and sidereal time, and an easy way to know what will be overhead at night (no need for a planisphere, just a sky chart with right ascension).

As designed. I would recommend that unless you work outdoors you obtain an SMA extension cable to make it easier to place the antenna outside so it gets a fix quickly. That's usually a characteristic of GPS in general - The modules works perfectly, or even a bit better than most.

Excellent Clock

I've bought three of these GPS Clocks through three design generations. All have worked, providing GPS-accurate time with the desirable and interesting tenth-second time display, much like the old Heathkit GC-1000 Most Accurate Clock from 1987. I especially like the red LED 7-segment displays, which are easily read. The latest generation with HH MM and SS digit separation and optional colons, and with (somewhat limited duration) super-capacitor storage for GPS data, is my favorite. The wood case is a bit tricky to assemble but works ok, with an effective smoky-gray filter window. I added a right-angle SMA adapter so the antenna cable exits rearward. I have two Most Accurate Clocks and I found the tenth-second digits of these Heathkit clocks and that of the GPS Clock roll over simultaneously, even when seen video recorded at 8X speed; I find that interesting and enjoyable! My clocks are deep inside by house, which has radiant-barrier (think of it a giant aluminum foil umbrella) thermal insulation so I use a GPS antenna located on my roof. The current clock design allows a choice between 3.3 and 5.0 vdc to feed the GPS antenna, allowing the use of more-common, remote-located GPS antennas. The current third-generation clock design has moved the GPS Sync LED to the rear of the circuit board, where it no longer distracts from the time display. What would I like beyond this Generation 3 design? Perhaps more control to dim the displays and longer storage of GPS data when not powered. As in all good products, the designer, Nick Sayer, has listened and has evolved the design to enhance the features and performance. This GPS Clock is highly recommended!

Great Clock Kit

This is a GPS clock kit with high quality parts. It was easy to build because the surface mount components were preinstalled. There were clear instructions for construction and set up was easy. The nice feature is the time is always correct and doesn't need to be set. Time is displayed to the tenth of a second. The only negative is if GPS signal is not present tube clock displays no GPS and doesn't keep time until it acquires a signal. It has an external antenna that has a long cord for mounting outside. With this I have always had signal. It comes with a case. In all a great kit.
